Add Style & Warmth with Wooden Venetian Blinds
Wooden venetian blinds and shutters have become very popular for the home in the UK in recent years. Most wooden venetian blinds today are made from special lightweight timber (often basswood or paulownia) which are strong, have a very fine grain and are suitable for sanding and staining. Traditionally the woods that are used today for blinds and shutters have in the past been used for sculpture, model making and instrument making due to the performance and finish qualities that these woods have. In addition to real wood products, ‘wooden blinds’ is also now used as a broader more generic term to describe any venetian blind product made from a ‘wood like’ material. Other materials being used today include mdf and other faux woods, bamboo and veneer composites.
Wooden blinds give a stylish and warm appearance to any room in the house. Nowadays there are many colours and stains to choose from, especially online, with white wooden venetian blinds being very popular, as well as a multitude of finishing options for ladder braids, chords, tapes and acorns. Blinds with wide slats are also all the rage at the moment. Wooden blinds can be used in most rooms in the house however in rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom that can have high humidity or condensation or where a blind could be subject to splashes or stains, care should be taken to make sure that the blind chosen is suitable for this type of environment. In these situations most blind manufacturers will recommend a faux wood venetian blind to be used as they tend to perform better than natural woods, which can often absorb water and warp when drying.
Today wood blinds are available to purchase as a ready-made product or as a made to measure product. There are still some blind manufacturers offering a true made to measure wooden venetian blind, where the timber slats are all cut from longer lengths and the blind is assembled in a similar way to a made to measure aluminium venetian blind. However today most ‘made to measure’ wooden venetian blinds that are sold are in fact ready-made venetian blinds that are imported from the Far East and then cut to the required width for customers by the blind manufacturers. As such large quantities of various styles, colours and sizes are imported , the blind manufacturers are able to offer a wide range of products that can rival their true ‘made to measure’ wooden venetian blind products, (even with all their customisable options), at a relatively cheap price. Wooden blinds in larger slat widths are also nowadays being often offered as an economical alternative to fitted plantation style shutters.
When purchasing wooden window blinds it is always worth considering the stack height of the slats when the blind has been retracted. As the slats on a wooden venetian blind are quite thick, the stack height can get quite large when the drop is high and the slat width is narrow. Care should be taken not to allow the stack height to get so large that it obstructs the opening of the window or door or blocks too much of the glazed area of a window.
If you are considering wooden venetian blinds throughout your house we also suggest that you give a thought to cleaning. Wood blinds probably have the largest horizontal surface area of all blind types and seem to attract dust and dirt more than any other blind. Unfortunately wood venetian blinds are also one of the most difficult blinds to clean and are often unsuitable for being put in contact with water. Therefore to keep your blinds looking great we advise a regular cleaning and dusting regime be established to prevent dirt and dust building up.
